Treasurer Tax Sale Information/Eligibility

Tax Sale Information / Eligibility
All parcels that have a balance due for taxes and special assessments from the prior year's Spring installment are eligible for the Treasurer's Tax Sale. There are several deadlines for making payments, with increasing amounts due, please contact our office for more information.

On or before the first of July each year or 51 days after the tax payment due date, a list is compiled of delinquent properties. At that time an additional tax sale charge is added, a certified letter is sent to each property owner, and all names and addresses are published in two local newspapers.

Tax Sales must be held no later than 171 days after the list is certified to the Auditor. Lake County's Tax Sale is usually scheduled between July 1st and March 1st in the Auditorium of the Lake County Government Center. Minimum acceptable bid on sale is everything owed on the parcel through the current year of the date of the sale. The lien is sold to the highest bid. Winning bids must be paid in the Treasurer's Office on the day of the Tax Sale.

Properties that do not sell on the "A" sale have a certificate issued to the Lake County Board of Commissioners. The Commissioners may offer the certificates at a public auction following the statutes for the tax sale. After payment is received for the lien, the Lake County Auditor issues the Tax Sale Certificate. For redemption information or information on assuming title, please contact the Lake County Auditor's Office at (219) 755-3155 (link to Auditor).
The Indiana statutes governing the tax sale can be found in IC 6-1.1-24 and IC 6-1.1-25. This statute is available on the internet here
